Skill Break Down for Setting up a Learning System (EIT)

Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT)

EIT uses Moodle a digital learning environment for all classes provided and a platform for getting resources to students online. This system uses many people with a vast range of skill sets to set up and maintain.

High End Skill Set:

  • Web Developer: A web developer is necessary for coding all the content on the page, server communications, upload links, scripts etc;

  • Database Administrator: A db admin would be responsible for all the information which is saved in database. This could be student records teacher records or data validation methods.

Mid Range Skill Set:

  • Help Desk:  The help desk would advise students and teachers alike of strategies to deal with problems they are having with the software, weather it be technical skills they lack or weather something has gone wrong on the developers side, they are tasked with either telling the developers about a problem or assisting learners or teachers with technical skills required to achieve the tasks they have.

Low Range of Skills:

  • Teachers: Delivering content to a class, this usually is a teacher using upload links provided by web developers to upload content to the pages in which students learn from.
  • Students: Students use moodle to access resources used in their classes. This requires a basic skill set of how similar systems work  in order to navigate and achieve the tasks they have set out to do.

Implications of Learning Technologies within Coursera

Coursera https://www.coursera.org/ is a purely online company who teaches different subjects with the help of universities around the world. The technology needed to achieve such a reputation as Coursera is the most advanced methods of digital learning technologies. I would like to pick three of the technologies they use and describe how the help or hinder learners.

Pre recorded and edited videos:  These pre-recorded and edited videos which are used on coursera make up the bulk of the learning materials used for the course. The benefits of pre recorded videos have benefits for both the students and the teachers. The learners (students) are able to watch a video, pause the video, go back and listen to something multiple times until they are able to understand the topic, or skip ahead if the learner needs to get to a certain piece of information or if they are losing focus on the video. The benefits for pre recorded videos for the teacher is that they only need to make the video once and it can be used multiple times to teach many students. The only exception to this might be that the information needs updating and the videos may need updating once or twice a year depending on the subject.

Not only are the videos audio and visual stimulus for learners but with the added ability to skip forward, go back and pause. It makes recorded videos the ideal tool to deliver information to students.

Coursera Designed Adobe Reader: Coursera has designed their own adobe reader software for displaying all text documents that need to be read as a part of the course. It integrates with the rest of their system and is easy to use and nothing needs to be installed on their own computers making it a suitable method of delivering written content to the learners. The user interface is very nice and it provides for just reading of the documents.

Discussion Threads:  The discussion threads on the Coursera Web Site are located underneath videos. This allows the teachers teaching the topic to be able to retain that interaction that is required if a student does not have the mental capacity to understand what was said in the video, it gives the teacher an opportunity to explain the topic in a different way, this is beneficial to not only the student who asked the question but also gives a better understanding to those students who understood to start off with re enforcing what they have already learnt and looking at the topic in a different way.

Wiki Educator

Here is a link to my wiki educator page. http://wikieducator.org/User:Andybro

I added content to the page of another users wiki educator page, this was quite easy and I felt quite comfortable doing it. The problem was that someone edited my page and ruined not only the formatting but some of the content. I did not like what they posted to the wiki educator page either. I felt very uncomfortable with someone being able to edit my page and can now only imagine how the person whose page I edited felt.

Will look to try and revert my wiki educator page after this post.

Challenges

Challenges for Ubiquitous Learning
Ubiquitous Learning has many challenges for the learner with learning all around them all the time, subconsciously or consciously learning from all sources, the internet is a big part of this, challenges that may happen is the overflow of information. This can be easily described by trying to drink from a  fire hydrant. It can be cumbersome and overwhelming for students to the point where the will to learn is too much and the learner shuts off to process the information already given.

Challenges for Individualized Learning

Individualized learning is the pace and interests of the learner, this makes learning more immersive for the learner and at their own pace makes learning a slower process, however the learner will take in everything that they get taught. The main challenge for this is the speed at which a  learner will learn this way. Self motivation is a huge problem along with the time it takes to understand what they are learning.

Integrated E-Learning Technologies - The Good and the Bad

Youtube Videos as a learning Source

The technologies that are used for creating a video which can be uploaded to youtube are endless, a combination of theoretical models, real life experiences along with detailed descriptions of what is happening. Not only can you re watch the video, but the video can then be re watched and analyzed and discussed for mac learning efficiency within a classroom environment.

Barriers for Learning with Technology

Learning with the technologies online and computer based can only get you so far, the actual experience of physically doing a task will get you far better learning experience than just learning the theory by itself. A better understanding of theory can be achieved when you have the understanding about mistakes and things that can go wrong, why you do things certain ways and the mistakes that can be made. It is all good and well being shown how to do something but when actually doing the tasks the mistakes made are so valuable a learning experience that it is silly to think that you can learn something without having ever had the experience of these mistakes or how to handle them.

Pedagogies

Game- Based Learning: Game based learning simulates a situation from a real life scenario and puts a learner in this situation forcing them to learn how to do it without risk of  breaking anything or harming themselves. It is an experience way of learning by doing it. This cannot compensate for the real thing but it definitely provides the tools necessary to learn quickly with a hands on approach.

Resource- Based Learning: This type of learning focus's on a students ability to gather knowledge from a pool of resources which is large enough (such as the internet) and focus's on the learners ability to filter out information and gather needed information through searches and at the pace that suits them. This style of learning is becoming necessary with globalization such as ours where information is widespread and easily accessible by everyone. The problem with this style of learning that there is much false information floating around and without sources to back this information up, a learner may learn the wrong things.

Case- Based Learning: This is actually case based teaching, and Problem based learning. The teacher will create a real life problem based scenario and ask the student to solve this problem, it encourages analytical based thinking and reflection on how things could have been done better or made more efficient. The teacher is there to guide the learner through any roadblocks they have but is only that; a guide when the learner gets stuck.

Project- Based Learning - This type of learning presents real world problems for a deeper understanding of actual tasks that need to be performed in the workplace. The teacher is again there to guide students and teach when learning needs to be done.

An Example of Game-Based Learning from my Past

Runescape is a MMO game and in its very early stages playing the game at 12 years old taught me how things in the real world worked. To tan some leather you had to kill a cow, take its hide, tan the hide and get a needle and thread to create hide armour. Obviously this isn't detailed enough to allow me to recreate something similar in real life, however it taught me that anything that was made out of leather was from the hide of an animal which I had no clue at the time. This was the same with the process for mining smelting and heating up and working metals for metalworking and various other skills which gave me an idea of how they were completed.

Integration of E-Learning with Runescape

The integration of E-Learning could be done by youtube videos, real time streaming with explanations of what your doing and why, Power point slides and chats about recorded situations where you are able to understand what you could do better if you were in this situation or a similar situation. Graphs and priorities, efficiency of time management and resources. For example, in Runescape, you farm and this takes real world time, time management skills can be learnt by adding up all the times of how long it takes everything to grow and making a schedule to keep these things constantly planted and growing while doing other tasks which also require their time to be managed. This is for ultimate efficiency.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming with VAKOG

NLP and VAKOG

VAKOG (Visual, Audio, Kinesthetic, Olfactory and Gustatory) are the 5 human senses and NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) is the theory for how we use these senses to create expierence and memory. NLP studies how a human takes information from the senses, creates a model in their head which is specific to each individual to best create an understanding of the senses.

Learning is experience, which means that VAKOG coupled with NLP is the process of human learning on a chemical and logical level, the base level that defines how we think and act.

Ubiquitous & Personalized Learning

Ubiquitous Learning & Personalized Learning

These two types of learning go hand in hand. Ubiquitous Learning just means that you are able to learn from any and all sources, sources form everywhere, not just a school with a teacher. Personalized learning means that you learn what your interested in, as you are able to understand it and at your own pace.

Why am I learning? How do I learn?

Why Are you Learning?

I started out passionate about game design, I wanted to build and create worlds, set rules and regulations, create universes with thought, programming allows me to do this and I am still very passionate about game design.

My focus has just recently shifted into programming drone software to make drones autonomous. This will change the world and I am now very passionate about being a part of this drone revolution. Everything I am learning and understanding is for these passions and I want to know as much as possible so I have the ability to leave my mark on assisting to fuel the incredible potential of advancements in drone technology.

I have always known the reasons I am learning and studying the subjects I am studying, it is part of a plan and motivates me every day.

Other factors of why I am learning:

  • To get off the unemployment benefit
  • To get a better quality of life.
  • To make myself better as a person.
  • To learn how technology works, feel more powerful in myself being able to control the technology and influence others.
  • To have the money to live comfortably.
  • To impress my peers.
  • To get a piece of paper saying that I know what I am talking about.
  • It interests me, life is a long journey of learning.
  • Many more...

How do you Learn?

I love to play the guitar and learn new songs on a regular basis. I also love to sing these songs and I have found the only way that I can manage to learn a new song is by playing the same chords of the song over and over repetitively until it has been stored into muscle memory.

After the chords have been stored in muscle memory I start note the exact chords I am playing at points where certain words in the song should go.(for initial timing). Then repeat until it is stored in my memory.

There is no substitute when it comes to learning to play an instrument for actually doing it. No amount of watching someone else will ever allow you to flawlessly play the song on your first try no matter how long you have spent watching or reading how it goes. This is because of the physical aspect.
